Medicines in Egypt

Egypt has become a popular destination not only for tourism but also for purchasing pharmaceuticals. Tourists appreciate the accessibility and, in their opinion, the high quality of Egyptian medicines. Thanks to an effective quality control system, counterfeits are virtually nonexistent in the pharmaceutical market. Below is a list of the most popular medications that can be purchased in Egyptian pharmacies.

Antiviral Medications and Fever Reducers

To quickly relieve a cough, popular herbal syrups in Egypt include Koffex, Guava Syrup, Bbs, and Bronchikum. Each bottle typically costs between 1 and 2 dollars. For a sore throat, lozenges such as Tantum Verde, Larypro, and Orofar are effective, and a pack of these usually costs less than 1 dollar. The Egyptian equivalent of Nazivin is Otrivin, also priced around 1 dollar. For fever, effervescent Aspirin Cevamol is quite effective. Fever reducers available include Panadol, Gevamol, Brufen, and Megafen (for children). Exedrin is a common alternative to Citramon. For headaches, NO-Migren and Metrogil work well.

Medications for Digestive and Gastrointestinal Disorders

For alleviating stomach heaviness, the Egyptian medication Fawar, a powder that dissolves quickly in water, is recommended. For intestinal issues, Eucarbon, which contains charcoal, mint, and senna extracts, is very effective. For digestive upset, the anti-diarrheal medicine Entocid can be used. To relieve gas, Antinal is a good option. To restore intestinal flora, Lacteol FORT is helpful. Ranitidine can be taken for stomach cramps. The Egyptian version of Smecta is Smecta. For bloating and gastrointestinal discomfort, SPASMO-Amrase is useful.

Antibiotics

For children, the antibiotic Cefzil (CEFPROZIL) is available in syrup form, while for adults, it comes in powder form. Rovamycine is effective for severe tonsillitis. Flucloxacillin and Augmentin contain amoxicillin. Septrin is commonly used for treating infections of the urinary tract, gastrointestinal system, and respiratory tract. All of these medications cost no more than 5 dollars per package.

Burn Ointments

Egyptian ointments such as Pantenol are very effective for treating burns. For sunburns, the cooling lotion with white clay, Calamil, is ideal. For fair-skinned individuals, Bepanten is a good option.

How to Buy Medications?

It’s best to pay for medications in Egyptian pounds. If you don’t have local currency, the seller may round up the price when converting to dollars. Keep in mind that they might also try to take advantage of the exchange rate. To avoid this, it’s a good idea to visit a bank or exchange office before heading to the pharmacy.

Don’t buy too many medications, as they have a short shelf life. With 20-30 dollars, you can stock up on a small selection for various situations. Remember that it’s unlikely you’ll be able to exchange Egyptian pounds back into dollars. In Egypt, medicines can be purchased not only in specialized pharmacies but also in supermarket pharmacies.
